It’s a rematch of the rematch, with the Washburn Millers and Wayzata Trojans meeting for the 6AA Championship for the third straight year. The top-ranked but second-seeded Millers travel again to Wayzata to take on the second-ranked and number one seeded Trojans. Match is at Wayzata High School at
7:oopm 5:00pm (moved to 5pm because of the boys’ 6AA final at 7pm).
You could call this the virtual state tournament championship, as the two-top ranked teams in Class AA play for the third straight season to see who gets a trip to the actual state tourney. Combined, the Millers and Trojans have 37 state tournament appearances, though Wayzata has a whopping 25 appearances over the years, with seven championships, while the Millers have 12 appearances and one championship.
The Millers enter the playoffs as the second seed and as the Class AA number one-ranked team. They ended the regular season 12-1-1 and have a current record of 14-1-1, having last defeated St. Louis Park 2-0 in the 6AA Semifinal.
The Trojans are the top-seed in the sectionals but had moved down a notch to second behind Washburn in the final regular season poll. The Trojans are undefeated so far this season with a record of 14-0-3. The three draws included one against Minnetonka and two with Edina.
The teams last met in last year’s 6AA Championship, with the Millers coming from behind to defeat the Trojans, 3-1, fueled by a hat trick by senior Kaitlyn Villars. Two years ago the Trojans scored in the last minute and then went on to win the championship match in extra time.
